Unemployment Assistance
While UH has made a guarantee that GA employment is not at risk, it has made no such guarantee for some other university employees, including undergraduate workers, casual hires, and contracted employees. If your hours are being reduced or you are fired, you can find information about and apply for unemployment assistance here: https://huiclaims.hawaii.gov/#/
Expanded unemployment insurance
The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act provides supplemental unemployment insurance (UI) funding to expand individuals’ eligibility, increase benefit amounts, and lengthen the duration of benefit availability. Follow the link for more info.
UH Employment Status Websites
Graduate Assistant positions (and other positions like lecturer) are frequently posted on the Work at UH website. Many openings are available after the start of an academic term, due to the diverse timeframes of faculty grant applications.
The Hawaii Information Portal (HIP) is the most comprehensive site to see information about your GA employment. Here you can access:
Your previous pay statements
Form for direct deposit into your bank account(s)
Annual W-2 forms and tax withholding status
Beneficiaries of payments in case of fatal injury
Otherwise, there is a Timesheet and Payment System that includes a potentially accurate description of your contract and a chart of the biweekly payment period dates.
If you have issues with being paid inaccurately or behind schedule, it might be most effective to contact your hiring unit’s Human Resources worker(s) directly. The chart with their contacts is here. They might direct you to the Payroll Office, but receiving backpay for previous pay periods is possible in the UH system.
If you are looking for part-time employment (hourly wage), you can search through SECE (Campus Student Employment Office), which a different contracting system than what GAs exist in. This database includes on-campus and off-campus employers.
