Academic Labor United (ALU) exists in order to empower and represent the rank-and-file graduate workers of the University of Hawaiʻi and commits itself to union democracy, the fight for improved working conditions, the right to collective bargaining, the defense of academic freedom, and the pursuit of justice.

We are currently working to win legal recognition for our right to unionize and collectively bargain. The 1250+ graduate assistants at UH do essential labor and are the backbone of the university. At some point every undergraduate student is taught by a graduate teaching assistant; graduate research assistants advance scientific frontiers; and graduate administrative assistants run key facilities on campus. As graduate employees we deserve a seat at the table when decisions are made that affect our lives, those of our students, and the broader community.

ALU works only with the participation of its members. Make your voice heard, stay up to date on events and news, and make our union stronger: become a member today!
